Local info 2

A short distance away from us on the other side of Le Moustier is a beautiful, restored chateau which i recently have been told an interesting story about.

It was bought quite a while ago by a dutch couple, he was the inventor of the low energy (12v) bulb and over a span of about 7 years restored the chateau to its former glory. Unfortunately, 4 years ago, after all the work was completed, he died. His wife soon after put it on the market but changed her mind and now lives there permanently. Every night, in memory of her husband, all the rooms in the chateau have the curtains open and the lights on making it a spectacular sight when passing.

The height of fashion!

I took this picture on a passing visit in Le Bugue (on yet another trip to BricoMarche!), a hand painted sign at the side of a small clothes shop, strategically positioned on the door under the building number....who needs posh computer illustration programmes, great stuff!!!

No posing from Philippa, honest!

On an early evening walk a couple of days ago we walked through the nearest village of Le Moustier and found this, what we thought at first was an odd street name sign, but is in fact a marker for the height of the last major flooding of the Vezere river on 4th October 1960 which was as you can see around 4 feet above Philippa's head.

Even though there was a worse flood in the 1940's, fortunately for us and our house, the flood plein when we signed for the property reaches the two front gate posts that you can see on the first main picture of this blog.

The first week of 2011 has been dry but very, very cold at night, unfortunately no rain as yet so i haven't christened my hat yet, i'm sure there;ll be plenty of use for it very soon!!!
